Repair or Replace?

Hey friend,

This month, we had what I'm now calling "The Dryer Dilemma".

Our 23-year-old Kenmore dryer stopped working. A visit from the repairman said the timer was shot.

And what started as a household decision quietly turned into a midlife metaphor.

Thirst

We almost replaced it.

23 years? That dryer qualified for AARP.

I put the "repair or replace" question out to my Facebook friends.

Most people said "replace it". Honestly, that made sense. The repair was quoted at $230 - almost half the price of a new machine.

At first, I was Team Replace; hubby was Team Repair. Then we talked numbers and he shifted to "replace", too.

Case closed, right?

Except... something about tossing the whole thing didn't sit right. Because this is what we do now, isn't it?

If something is noisy, slow, inconvenient - we upgrade.

New job. New strategy. New city. New identity.

Replace the whole thing.

But, what if the whole thing isn't broken? What if it's just one part?

That impulse to overhaul everything? That's the thirst.

Recipe

After hubby went to bed, I started researching.

I found a generic timer part for $65. Then YouTube University entered the chat. Three videos later, I learned replacing the timer takes less than 20 minutes.

So, I ordered the part - $95 with tax and rush shipping.

I put on my imaginary superhero cape and switched to Team Repair while he slept.

Two days later, the part arrives.

Tools out. Knob off. Back panel off. Wires swapped. Screws tightened.

Twenty minutes later? Back in business, and she's drying like it's 2003.

Here's the reframe:

Before you replace the whole thing, diagnose the problem.

Midlife decisions deserve research, not reaction.

Sometimes replacement is absolutely right.

But sometimes... it just needs a new part.

  • Inspiration: Not everything old is obsolete.
  • Education: When something feels "off", isolate the exact friction point. Name it specifically.
  • Invitation: What in your life feels broken right now - and is it truly the whole machine?

Examine before you exit. Discernment is more powerful than disruption.

Closing Sip

We're blessed to be able to replace the dryer if needed.

But, there was something deeply satisfying about researching, learning, and giving it a little more life.

If you're sitting with a repair-or-replace decision right now, reply and tell me which team you're on.

I'm currently accepting life coaching and personal branding consulting clients, and would love to help you diagnose before you demolish.

Forward this to someone who is deciding between overhaul and adjustment right now.

Here's to ending February repaired...and quenched!

Hey friend, I stopped by the MAC counter this month because I needed a few things. I was out of eyeliner, needed a fresh lip liner, and had been hearing everyone rave about a color called Nightmoth. So I bought it. I came home, unpacked my little shopping bag, and started putting everything away. Then I looked at my other lip liners. And there it was. A nearly brand-new Nightmoth lip liner. Apparently, I'd already bought it. I just forget I had it. I stood there laughing at myself. Then,...

Joy at any age.

Hey friend, A few weeks ago, my 90-year-old mother and I were out running errands. By that point, we'd been in and out of stores, riding around town, checking things off the list. Mom has arthritis in her knees, and some days they really bother her. As we were wrapping up, I asked, "Do you want to stop by Lowe's and get some flowers for the back deck?" Without missing a beat, she said: "I'm not hurting when I do something I love." Now, let's be clear. The arthritis didn't magically disappear....

Hey friend, I had two photo shoots this month. A headshot session I had planned. And a brand shoot opportunity that popped up last minute, with three outfit changes and full production. And if I'm honest? I was nervous about both of them. Not because I didn't need new images. But because a small voice kept saying: "Wait until you're a little further along." Thirst It's been over four years since my last set of photos. And a lot has changed. I've lost weight. Shifted direction in my business....
